Rafter (1925- ) Marine Police Collection<CR>(1917-1968)The collection is comprised of copies of documents and correspondence, with miscellaneous news clippings and publications. The folders of loose copy photos are included.Biographical BackgroundRoy W. Rafter was born August 2, 1925 in Hagerstown, Maryland. After service in the U. S. Navy (1943-46), he attended the Maryland University Law Enforcement Institute and joined the Maryland Marine Police. Rafter worked his way up to Commander of the Maryland Marine Police and eventually returned to Chester, Maryland where he lives today.Scope and ContentAlthough most of the material in this collection is copied from the originals, it represents a considerable amount of information on the Maryland Oyster Navy and its later successor, the Maryland Marine Police. The photographs of the powerboats used by the state probably comprise the largest collection in existence. The collection of newspaper articles relating to the activities of the marine police mostly in the 1960s is quite extensive.SubjectsMaryland Oyster Navy and its successors. No image URL.View
